Isotonic Solutions
-Isotonic solutions expand the intravascular compartment-caution w/ HTN & HF
-Lactate is converted by the liver into bicarbonate- careful with acid-base imbalances -D5W is "weakly isotonic" & can act like a hypotonic solution. Examples: 0.9% sodium chloride, normal saline, 0.9, NS Lactated Ringers (LR), |
Hypotonic
Use extreme caution w/ pts w/ risk for high ICP or pts w/ 3rd spacing Or pts with decreased vascular volumes.
Examples: 0.45% sodium chloride, 0.33% sodium chloride, 0.225% sodium chloride |
Hypertonic
Hypertonic fluids can quickly and significantly expand the intravascular space and cause volume overload. Monitor pts. closely.
Examples: 5% dextrose in 0.45% sodium chloride 5% dextrose in 0.9% sodium chloride 5% dextrose in lactated ringer's D5LR |
