Arabian Peninsula

A wedge of land between the Red Sea and Persian Gulf covered in desert and the homeland of the Arabs as well as the center of Islam.

Muhammaad

The prophet of Islam who preached his teachings, after hearing a voice from Allah and collected a group of followers that ultimately regained Makkah and made it a holy city of Islam.



Caliph

A Muslim leader.



Umayyads

Caliphs that governed the Arab Empire from the city of Damascus, and spread Islam into Asia and Africa

Abbasid

A new dynasty formed after the Shia Muslims overthrew the Umayyads, that focused on improving trade and culture. Their rule brought a Golden Age.




How did Islam Spread

The Muslim armies brought the religion into conquered lands. Preachers and traders also taught the religion.




Sunni

A group of Muslims who accepted the rule of the Umayyad caliphs.



Shia

A group of Muslims who believed the descendants of Ali should rule.

Seljuk Turks

Nomadic warriors that seized Baghdad but ruled as sultans alongside the Abbasid caliphs.




Moguls

People from central Asia, that stormed into Baghdad, burning buildings and killing people in 1258, bringing an end to the Arab Empire.




Ottomans

Turkish clans that conquered much of the Byzantine Empire, renamed their capital Istanbul, and pushed into southeastern Europe, Southwest Asia, and North Africa.




Safavids

A dynasty which ruled Persia until the 1700s ,founded by a Shia leader named Ismail. During this, Persian spread as a language of culture and trade.

Elephant Clock

An Islamic Achievement constructed by Al-Jazari that is a result of Multiculturalism. It is a water-clock in the shape of an Elephant.




Astrolabe

A tool that helps sailors navigate using the positions of the stars.




Sulieman I

The most famous Ottoman sultan, who ruled during the 1500s, dubbed “The Lawgiver” for organizing Ottoman laws. He built many schools and mosques throughout the Empire.
