Muhammad

He is the founder of Islam and is considered in the Muslim faith to be the last great prophet.

Mecca

It is a holy city of Islam. Muhammad was born here, but his teachings were not immediately accepted here. It is also the direction to which a Muslim must pray.

Medina

It is a holy city of Islam. Muhammad fled here from Mecca. It is in this place that he gained a following and his religion began to flourish.

Allah

It is the name for God in the Muslim faith.

Koran/Qur'an

It is the holy text of the Muslim faith.

Five Pillars of Islam

They are the five basic responsibilities and beliefs of Islam: 1) Declaration of faith 2) Charity to the poor; alms giving 3) Pray five times a day facing Mecca 4) Pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) 5) Fast during the holy month of Ramadan

Sunni

It is the branch of Islam that accepts the first four caliphs as rightful successors to Muhammad

Shi'a

It is the branch of Islam whose members acknowledge Ali and his descendants as the rightful successors of Muhammad

Battle of Tours

It is a battle where the Muslims were stopped from penetrating further into Europe. The Christian victor was Charles Martel. This battle kept the Muslims in Spain.

Dome of the Rock

A temple built in dedication to Muhammad. It is in Jerusalem at the spot where Muhammad ascended into Heaven.

Sufi

A Muslim who represents the mystical dimension of Islam

jihad

A holy struggle or striving by a Muslim for a moral or spiritual or political goal
