What is a spinal ganglion?
A dorsal root ganglion and spinal root ganglion are the same thing!
What is the importance of the great anterior radicular artery of Adamkiewicz?
The great anterior radicular artery of Adamkiewicz supplies the lower two thirds of the spinal cord via the anterior spinal artery.
Do cervical nerves exit above or below their named vertebrae? How many cervical nerves are there?
Cervical nerves exit above their named vertebrae and there are 8.
Do thoracic nerves exit above or below their named vertebrae? How many thoracic vertebrae are there?
Thoracic nerves exit below their named vertebrae. There are 12.
Trace the path of the axillary nerve. What does it innervate?
Comes off the posterior cord. Runs behind the humerous. Innervates the deltoid and teres minor.
Trace the path of the radial nerve.
Comes off the posterior cord. Runs behind the humorous. Comes around in front of the lateral epicondyl where it splits into the superficial branch (runs deep to radial artery into hand and fingers) and the posterior interosseous nerve (terminates just proximal to the wrist).
Trace the path of the median nerve.
Comes off the brachial plexus. Runs through the elbow (MAT- median nerve, artery, tendon) and right up through the middle of the wrist.
Trace the path of the ulnar nerve.
Comes off the brachial plexus. Runs medial to elbow (funny bone!) and then along with the ulnar artery.
What is being described:
"Tapered inferior end of spinal cord"
Conus medullaris
What is being described:
"Slender fibrous strnad leaving inferior end of spinal cord"
Filum terminale
What is being described:
"Unequal length of spinal cord and vertebral column produces progressive obliquity of dorsal and ventral roots"
Cauda equina
Where is the cervical enlargement of the spinal cord?
C4-T1. Forms brachial plexus.
Where is the lumboscarcal enlargement of the spinal cord?
L2-S3. Forms lumbar and sacral plexes.
What's in the epidural space?
Fat, connective tissue, and venous plexuses.
What's in the subdural space?
Really a potential space that has a capillary layer of fluid.
What's in the subarachnoid space?
CSF
What are denticulate ligaments made of?
Pia mater
What supplies the blood flow to the spinal cord?
The anterior spinal artery services the anterior 2/3. The posterior spinal artery servicecs the posterior 1/3. The radicular arteries contribute blood to the anterior and posterior spinal arteries. The most important radicular artery is the Great anterior radicular artery of Adamkiewicz.
What level would you perform a spinal tap?
Between L3/L4 or L4/L5 or through sacral hiatus.
What are uncovertebral joints?
Uncovertebral joints articulate between the uncus (below) and the uncinate process (above). Found only in C3-C7.
Where does the the spinal cord end in embryos? In infants? In adults?
-The whole length as embryos
-L4-5 as infants
-L1-2 as adults
