How would you choose a suitable interval?

A suitable interval gives a measurable change between readings that would allow a pattern to be seen.

Give 3 ways in which you can ensure valid results

•Make sure you are actually measuring what you intend to measure

•Keep all other variables constant to ensure a fair test

•Make sure results are repeatable

Why might you decide to take more readings?

•to change the interval between readings to increase confidence in line of best fit

•to extend the range to increase the max & min values

•allow a mean to be calculated & reduce the effect of errors

What is a control variable?

A factor which is kept constant during an experiment. The independent variable is not changed in control.

What is the range of an experiment?

The min & max values of an experiment.

What name is given to the standard procedure to minimise the effect of hazards of an experiment?

risk assessment

What is a fair test?

The independent variable is the only thing that affects the dependent variable because all other variables are kept constantz

Why would another person get a different result when repeating your investigation?

•different independent variable

•different method

•different control variables

Difference between dependent and independent variable

"I" change the independent variable. You measure the dependent which "depends" on the changed variable

How to make an experiment with many variables valid

Change only one variable, keep others constant

What is a reproducible set of results?

Same results, different person carrying out the same method

What is a repeatable experiment?

Same results, same method & equipment

What is a variable?

A factor that can be changed/kept constant. Usually have a quantity that can be measured

How could you judge when the end point of an experiment has been reached?

•Keep a reference sample to compare your results with

•agree a physical end point - when you are so tired you can no longer continue to make a valid comparison

How to construct a results table?

First column, X axis: independent variable

2nd column, y axis: dependent variable

Best way to deal with anomalous results?

Reject anomalous results, repeat results until they are consistent

How do you know if a range is suitable?

A suitable range would allow a pattern to be seen between results

What is the gap between each value called?

The interval

What is an anomalous result?

A result clearly not in line with other readings, doesn't fit the pattern
