What was the post famine crisis?
The failure of the potato crop brought economic pressure onto the landlords, who then transferred this pressure to their tenants by using severe measures to collect rent and eviction. MOST IRISH PEASANTS WERE TENANT FARMERS

What were the reasons for the 1870 Land Act?
1- Fenianism! 1867= fenian uprisings
2- Tenant Right! Irish Land League campaigning for tenant rights, land conf 1870 = momentum
3- GLADDERZ! his no. 1 objective was to 'pacify Ireland' and improve the sitch for Irish tenant farmers.
Terms of the Land Act?
Partially addressed 3Fs & gave 'bright clauses' = government loans for tenants buring holdings
Failures of the 1870 Land Act?
- Many tenants not protected by the Act; those with long leases etc.
- Lack of protection against eviction!
- Peace preservation Act = increased repression & Westmeath Act = increased police powers
- no creation of tribunal system 4 rent = failure to prevent unfair rent
- Many farmers not able to take advantage of 'Bright Clauses' - no money to borrow money!
How did the Land War start?
-Poor harvests in 1877/8
-Cheap imports from US = prices of Irish goods dropped. Money from migrants 4 the poor dried up.

-Boycotting (eg. Captain Boycott)
