The war all started around 1980.




Saddam Hussein felt threatened by Iran.




Thought that Khomeini was trying to lead his people to fight against him.

Khomeini wouldn’t agree with Iraq so they started to move in on them.




Both countries had different versions of the Islamic religion.


Iraqi- Sunnis Islam Iranian-Shiis Islam Not a big difference but enough to fight about.

Giving them instructions to fight would help

Each of these was approved by either Bush or Reagan.

Providing 60 billion dollars to Iraq




Providing them with millions of weapons

Providing them with more advanced technology



Providing them with a bunch of U.S. soldiers




And by providing the best military training there is.

Foreign Response





Iraq had about 17 countries that helped like USA, Saudi Arabia, and many others.

Iran had only 9 countries that helped like Argentina, Syria, and some others.



From this I can imagine that the countries on opposing sides didn't like each other very much.

The rise of the two new leaders-


-Saddam Hussein- Iraq


-Khomeini- Iran

Islamic religion from Iraq caused confusion in Iran.



Iran was no longer on the U.S.’s good side.




The war killed….


- about 375,000 Iranians


- about 300,000 Iranians

Long Term Results



The religious feud continued and is still going on today

Many families were affected by the war short and long from losing their family members



Iraq was in deep debt and affected everyone living there




Destroyed towns that some were never refixed

The first change is not pick a side and stay neutral.

The third change is not to send our men over to fight and die.
