Describe the recent history of Iran (1925-2001).
a. (2nd) Shah of Iran (Raza Palavi): Leader of Iran during most of 1950s-70s. Westernized Iran, supported by the USA, sold USA much oil, was brutal to Iranians that opposed him, created brutal secret police (Savac), twice forced from power, considered a puppet of the USA by many Iranians, etc.
b. Mohammad Mosedec: Elected Prime Minister when the Shah forced from the country in 1952. Nationalized oil industry and recognized USSR. USA saw him as a communist sympathizer and used CIA to force him from power, allowing the Shah to return to power.
c. Ayatollah Khomeini: Islamic fundamentalist that replaced the Shah and declared the USA to “The Great Satan” of the world. Refused to sell oil to the USA.
d. U.S. Embassy hostage situation: Iranians took US embassy workers hostage for over a year when Khomeini came to power.
e. Recent fears: The USA now fears that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear power and weapondry.
