Secularization is a theory that modern industrial society will inevitably lead to the disappearance of religion.



An example is that according to Stats Canada, non-attendance at religious services increased from 31% to 43% from 1985 to 2004

What is taboo? Give an example from the Catholic faith.

Taboo: Certain things and activities due to their sacred nature, are set aside for specific members of the group and are forbidden to others.

How has the media affected Voodoo?

By only mentioning the evil elements of the religion (zombies, voodoo dolls, black magic etc.) and fails to mention good aspects of the religion such as healing spells and holistic medicine. Also the media also inaccuarately captures the differences between hoodoo and voodoo.



--> Much maligned by the media due to racist ideas against a "black" religion

How did slavery help the emergence of Voodoo in Haiti?

Voodoo was supressed by white slaves due to their hatred for all africans and because voodoo gave them strength towards the slaves.



Also voodoo became its own religion in Haiti in the 19th century and later people brought it over to America where it was practiced in New Orleans.

Human Condition

- The human condition encompasses the unique features of being human, particularly the ultimate concerns of human existence.



- It can be described as the unalterable part of humanity that is inherent and innate to human beings and not dependent on factors such as gender, race, culture, or class.



- It includes concerns such as the meaning of life, the search for gratification, the sense of curiosity, the inevitability of isolation, and the awareness of the inescapability of death. In essence, the human condition is the self-aware, and reflective nature of Homo sapiens that allows for analysis of existential themes.



- humans search for purpose, are curious, and thrive on new information. High-level thought processes, such as self-awareness, rationality, and wisdom are considered to be defining features of what constitutes a person



- It has been defined as humans' capacity for good and evil.
