What are X-rays?
Photons which are minute bundles of energy traveling in wavelengths
Why are x-rays dangerous?
X-rays cause cells to be ionized
What is ionization? |
ionization is when an atom loses or gains an electron changing its charge. X-rays always knock out electrons
What is a soft X-ray?
longer wavelengths and less penetration.
what is a hard x-ray? |
shorter wavelengths and more penetration
What does it mean when we say X-rays are heterogenius?
They are not static, they can vary, they can be soft or hard
What is the max kVp for diagnositic X-rays?
150kVp
What max kVp for x-rays is radiation therapy? |
1 to 16 million kVp
What is a somatic effect of radiation?
effect on the individual, like reddening of the skin (ERYTHEMA)
What is a genetic effect |
effect on future generations
What is the relationship between mA and ionization?
Directly proportional, you double the mA and you double the ionization.
How about kV and ionization? |
when kV increases ionization also increases but unlike mAs it is not directly proportional
What are the 3 methods of tracking x-ray dosage received by people?
RAD
REM R what do they stand for? |
RAD-radiation absorbed dosage
REM-Roentgen Equivalent Man R- Roentgen |
RAD's REM's and R are all equivalent?
True or False |
True
What is the unit of measurement for dosage badges?
millirems
how many are we allowed per year as radialographers? |
5000 MREM's or 5 REM
Why is the word "equivalent" used in Roentgen Equivalent Man (REM) used?
the dosage is estimated on the different body parts based upon the reading on the badge
What does R (Roentgens) measure?
amount of radiation, usually in a lab situation, measuring the amount of radiation of X and gamma rays in the air.
what is the unit of measure? |
MR or milliroentgens
