What are the three principal organs of seed plants?
1. Roots
2. Stems
3. Leaves
All seed plants have these three things in common. Not all seed plants have flowers
What are the functions of roots?
to absorb water
to absorb nutrients and minerals
to anchor plants in the soil & hold soil in place.
What are the functions of a stem?
Support for the plant
Transport system for the nutrients
What is the main function of a leaf?
Photosynthesis!
What does differentiation mean?
It's when the cells, plant cells in this case, divide and get instructions on what they are going to function as.
What are the three main tissue systems in plants?
Dermal Tissue
Vascular Tissue
Ground Tissue
What is Dermal Tissue?
The outer covering of the plant. Typically consists of a single layer of epidermal cells.
What is Vascular Tissue?
Tissue that forms a transport system that moves water and nutrients throughout the plant.
What transports water in the vascular system of a plant?
Xylem
What transports sugar in the vascular system of a plant?
Phloem
Which way does water move throughout the plant? Is it pushed or pulled?
Upward, Pulled
Which way does sugar move throughout the plant? Is it pushed or pulled?
Downward (from the leaves), Pushed
What is ground tissue?
The cells that lie between dermal and vascular tissue make up the ground tissues.
Where are plant cells produced at?
Meristems.
What is an apical meristem?
groups of cells that divide to produce increased length of stems and roots.
What are the two main types of roots?
Taproots & Fibrous roots
What is a taproot?
A long thick primary root that grows thick in the soil with very small secondary roots that grow off of it.
What is a fibrous root?
Roots that branch out to an extent that no single root grows larger than the rest. Many roots.
