in 2000, 55 inmates but no staff members were killed. Staff violence is less common. Possible reasons for increase include improper classification and management of staff, overcrowding, the young age of most inmates, increases in racial tensions, and prison gang activity.
Perpetrator motives include: 1- Demonstrate power and dominance over others 2- Retaliate against a perceived wrong, such as the failure of another inmate to play a gambling debt 3- Prevent the perpetrator from being victimized. |
