Current picture/what's wrong
Story- Help clients tell story
New Perspectives- Help clients develop new perspectives that help them reframe their stories.
Leverage- Help clients achieve leverage by working on issues that make a difference.
What are the three stages of Stage 2 of the Skilled Helper Model?
Perferred picture/what do I want or need?
1. Possibilities-Help clients use their imaginations to spell out possibilities for a better future.
2. Change Agenda- Help clients choose realistic and challenging goals that are real solutions to the key problems and unused opportunities identified.
3. Commitment-Help clients find the incentives that will help them commit themselves to their change agendas.

1. Possible Strategies-Helps clients review possible strategies to achieve goals.

What is shadow-side of helping?
All those things that adversely affect the helping relationship, process, outcomes, and impact in substantive ways but that are not identified and explored by helper or client or even the profession itself.
Define Skilled Helper Model
flexible, humanistic, broadly based problem management and opportunity development, straightforward without ignoring the complexities of clients' lives or the helping process
What are the four key questions the Skilled Helper Model is based upon?
1. What's going on?
2. What do I need or want?
3. How do I get there?
4. How do I make it all happen?
What does the action arrow mean in the Skilled Helper Model?
How does the client make it all happen? Helper helps client to implement their plans. All three stages sit on this action arrow meaning clients need to act on their behalf from the beginning.
Why is flexibility so important in the Skilled-Helper Model?
Helping is for client; their needs take precedence over any model. 1. Any stage or task of the helping process can be the entry point. 2. Clients enage in each stage &
task of the model differently.
3. Stages within the model intermingle, helpers often find themselves moving back & forth.

1. mining- digging out what is useful from any model or school. 2. Organizing- helper model is organized by stages & tasks so can the info mined from the literature 3. Evaluating- model is pragmatic & focuses on outcomes, it can be used to evaluate vasts amounts of helping techniques

What are the "Shadow-sides" of helping?
1. No model- helper without model 2. Fads-ideas of therapy that come and go 3. Rigid applications of helping models- helpers who buy into a model and then stop learning; purity of model is more important than client 4. Virtuosity- third form of ineptness; specialize in certain area and run risk of ignoring clients needs
What is "transference"?
in the psychodynamic or psychoanalytic approach, it's the complex and often unconcious interpersonal dynamics between helper and client that are rooted in the client's and even helper's past
What did Carl Rogers believe about the helping relationship?
Rogers emphasized the quality of the relationship in representing the human-experiential. His work spawned widely used client center approach.
What is the "working alliance"?
1. The collaborative nature of helping-both client and helper are collaborators 2. Relationship is forum for relearning-helpers don't cure but the relationship is therapeutic in itself. 3 Relationship flexibility- Effective helpers use a variety of styles, skills, and techniques tailored to fit client
How do values and one's culture contribute to the helping-model?
Values are central to culture. Culture have shared beliefs and assumptions interace with shared values and produce shared norms that drive shared patterns of behavior
