Zora - She has been through all of it. There is nothing else she could go through that could phase her. It's not always bad. There are highs and lows for the fight for equal rights. She doesn't regret what has happened to her. The sword means she is going to fight back and not going to take anymore discrimination.
Mckay- That they must stick up for themselves. If they will be murdered by white people they will die fighting to survive. Even though they are dying they will be fighting back. The death blow means, the end to racism. The final change. All their struggle will be worth it if the discrimination ends.
Hughes- Not welcome in society, but even though he is exiled he will not be put down and will still keep fighting. Tomorrow(future) that society will change their opinions and never say African Americans are not aloud again. Someday Whites will regret treating Africans that way.

African Americans are leaving the South, because the living conditions are not altogether good. The expenses are going up and their wages keep going down and they can't afford to support their families. The Whites are angry, because the African Americans are going North for more money. Africans asking the paper for passes and job recommendations up North. Education was a big factor for moving out of the South. |

1910 - Most of the coloring is in the South 1920's Their moving West Some of the migration corridors were from the South West, South East is the deep south, Florida went to the East coast. Most Africans live in rural populations Changes are happening they are moving to more urban populations. Most from Indiana came from Kentucky. Huge change in population in Chicago, Michigan (Detroit), and Cleveland. |
