(SWITCH) Although the definition of poverty according to Investopedia is, the condition in which a person lacks the financial resources and essentials to enjoy a minimum standard of life, (SWITCH) society often pictures a child in a third-world country with their bones showing through their skin. (SWITCH) The visible poor is often showned, but what about the invisible? (SWITCH)

The misrepresentation of poverty in advertisements, shapes our views on poverty and minimizes our understanding of reality. To support this article, three arguments will be discussed; how advertisements mostly displays poverty in third world countries, the neglection of people’s daily struggle to survive through showing extreme images, and how the relationship between poverty and certain ethicities are exaggerated.

To begin, advertisements has the tendency to only advertize poverty in third-world countries, forgetting that it also exists in our own backyards. Using what we call ‘poverty porn’, which is when a type of media exploits the poor’s condition in order to generate the necessary sympathy for donations or support, the world focuses and forgets about people’s daily struggle to survive in developed countries where poverty is present.

(PLAY) A lot of society’s notions about poverty, is shaped by what they see in television, in commercials for example. Big organizations whoses commercials are on television, mostly display’s poverty in developing countries. Our population, therefore, tends to forget that poverty also exists in developed countries.

(SWITCH) Movies often only shows one face of poverty, the visible. Slumdog millionaire is an example of a movie who only shows one face of poverty, in the slums of india. No scenes of poverty were shot showing poverty in a developed country. Slumdog Millionaire also got bad critics and blamed for its ‘Poverty porn’ scenes.

The end of poverty is a documentary about why poverty still exists. Although the director is French, the only shots filmed were filmed in the slums of Africa and the barrios of Latin America. The movie is about global poverty, but no scenes in developed countries were taken or talked about.
