Amphictyony
A tribal league, normally with twelve members, who are bound together by a shared religious tradition and shared cultic site.
Apodictic Law
Law which “comes from the speaking.” It is a universal law which has no conditions attached, but is simply a “do this/don’t do this” command. Example: The Decalogue.
Ark
An ornate box that functioned as a portable shrine. Contained the tablets of the Law, the Staff of Moses/Aaron, and a jar of mana.
Case Law
Law that has developed over time within society based on their experiences. It gives conditions when it is to be used and punishments.

The Curse of Destruction
Commandment given about apostate towns within the society or cities that are to be captured by the Israelites. The entire town is to be destroyed and all in it are to be killed. Any possessions within the town normally taken as spoils of war are to be destroyed, including any animals. Also translated

The time period between the Destruction of Judah (587 B.C.) and the Restoration under Cyrus I. The upper class of the society was taken into Babylon during this time.

Innermost room of the Tabernacle and the Temple. Contained the Ark and was thought to be the place where God dwelt on earth.
Judge
An individual chosen by God to deliver his people from foreign oppression; a charismatic war leader.
Levirate Marriage
A marriage that occurs when a husband dies before the couple has any children. The widow is to marry the man’s brother or the nearest male relative. The first son of the new union is considered the child of the first brother.

Tribe within Israel that had the function of priests within Israel. They are responsible for sacrifices as well as maintaining shrines/The Tabernacle/The Temple. Sometimes separate from another class of religious
Messiah
“Anointed one.” Used to designate kings in the Old Testament.
Mercy Seat
Cover of the Ark that had two cherubim on it whose wings were outstretched over the top. Considered to be the Throne of God on earth.
Nazarite Vow
A vow given in ancient Israel. The man promises not to touch liquor or cut any of his hair for a period usually of 7 years. At the end of the time frame, his hair is shaved off and he is released from his vow. The vow can be made for a lifetime instead of a limited time.
Prophet
An individual chosen and called by God in order to pass on messages to the people. Often proves himself by performing signs and wonders or predicting the future.
The Tabernacle (Tent of Meeting)
Portable shrine to Yhwh constructed in the wilderness.

When God appears visually to people.
