Science
A process that uses logic, observations, and prior knowledge to answer questions and solve problems.
Scientific Method
A process of doing science.
Observation
Something you detect in your surroundings using any of your senses.
Purpose
A question you ask about the observations you make.
Hypothesis
A possible, and testable, scientific explanation based on logic, observations, prior knowledge, and evidence.
Experiment
A test of a hypothesis by collecting and recording data, which is often put in a data table.
Analysis and Conclusion
Evaluating and interpreting data, often into graphs, to see whether or not the hypothesis is correct.
Repeat
You must always repeat an experiment either to test a new and different hypothesis or for independent verification.
Theory
Tested multiple times by multiple people, theories are backed by lots of evidence and are used to explain a wide set of observations and facts.
Quantitative Observations
Measurements and observations including numbers (comes from the same root as "quantity")
Qualitative Observations
Observations based on your five senses.
Direct Observations
Observations made using the sense of sight.
Indirect Observation
Observations made using taste, touch, smell, and hearing.
Inferences
A reasonable statement, based on evidence and prior knowledge, that is accepted to be true
Variables
The conditions that change during the course of the experiment.
Independent Variable
The variable you have control over.
Dependent Variable
The variable that changes as a result of the independent variable.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment that tests the effects of one independent variable at a time.
Control Group
Independent variable is not changed to provide a comparison.
Experimental Group
Independent variable is changed and results are compared to the other group.
Metric System
The universal system of measurement used by scientist, and used all over the world. Based on the number ten.
Meter
The Metric System's base unit of measuring distance or length.
Liter
The Metric System's base unit of measuring volume.
Gram
The Metric System's base unit of measuring mass.
