Science
Process of asking and anwsering questions about the natural world using logic, critical thinking
Scientific Method
Process of doing science
Observation
Something you detect in your environment using any of your senses
Purpose
a question you ask about the observations you make
Hypothesis
Possible scientific anwser, must be testable, based on logic, observations, prior knowledge, and evidence
Experiment
Testing hypothesis by collecting and recording data, a data table is often used
Analysis & Conclusion
Evaluating and interpreting data to determine hypothesis, graphs are often used
Repeat
If data does not support hypothesis create new one if it does support repeat to make sure
Theory
Used to explain wide set of observations and facts, tested multiple times on multiple people
Quantitative Observations
Observations that involve taking measurements
Qualitatitive Observations
Observations that use descriptive words to describe an item
Direct Observations
Things you can see
Indirect Observations
Things you detect with other senses like smelling, hearing, etc.
Inferences
Something you assume to be true based on observation or past knowledge
Variables
Conditions that can change during an experiment, there is always at least 2 variables in a experiment
Independent Variable
a variable that you can change, you have direct control over (amount of water)
Dependent Variable
variable changes as result of independent variable, you do not have control over (weather)
Controlled Experiment
An experiment that test the effects of one independent variable at a time. Researcher attempts to keep all other independent variables constant. Test subjects are divided into a control group and experimental change
Control Group
independent variable is not changed to provide a comparison
Experimental Group
independent variable is changed and results are compared to the control group
Metric System
universal system of measurement used by scientists, used all over the world, based on # 10
Meter
a base unit of metric system, a measurement
Liter
a base unit of metric system, a measurement
Gram
a base unit of metric system, a measurement
