Science
a process of using logic, observations and prior knowledge to answer questions.
Scientific Method
a process of doing science.
Observation
something you notice or detect with your senses about your environment.
Purpose
a question about your observations.
Hypothesis
a possible answer to your question.
Analysis and Conclusion
evaluating and interpreting your data to determine whether or not your hypothesis was correct.
Repeat
if your evidence doesn't match your hypothesis, change the hypothesis and try again. even if the evidence does match the hypothesis, repeat the procedure and see if you get the same answer to check your work.
Theory
used to explain a wide set of observations and facts, backed by lots of evidence and tested multiple times by multiple people.
Quantitative Observations
making observations about measurement, temperature, mass, size, distance, velocity or any other observation having to do with measurement and quantity.
Qualitative Observations
describing the qualities of something such as color, texture, etc.
Direct Observations
An observation using sight.
Indirect Observations
An observation using any other sense besides sight, ie. sound, touch, taste.
Inferences
something you guess based on prior knowledge and indirect and direct observations.
Variables
the conditions that change during an experiment
Independent Variables
the variable that is controlled.
Dependent Variables
the variable that changes as a result of the independent variable.
Control Group
the group that has normal conditions
Experimental Group
the group you apply the changes of the independent variable to.
Metric System
a universal system of measurement based on the number 10.
Meter
the base measurement for length in the metric system.
Liter
the base measurement for volume in the metric system.
Gram
the base measurement for mass in the metric system.
Controlled Experiment
an experiment that tests the effects of the independent variables one at a time.
Experiment
Testing the hypothesis by collecting and recording data
