Science
A process of using logic, observations and prior knowledge to solve problems
Scientific Method
A step-by-step process of doing science
Observation
Something you notice about your environment using any of your senses
Purpose
A question that you ask about the observations you made
Hypothesis
A logical, testable scientific answer to your question
Experiment
Testing the hypothesis by collecting data and using a data table
Analysis and conclusion
Interpreting your data to figure out if your hypothesis is correct
Repeat
To redo your experiment whether or not your data supports your hypothesis
Theory
Used to explain a wide set of observed facts that are backed by large amounts of evidence and tested by multiple people many times
Quantitative Data
Observations made using measurements, temperature, mass, size, anything numerical
Qualitative Data
Observations made by describing the general properties used to identify the material such as color, feel, smell and texture
Direct Observations
Observations made by things that are seen
Indirect Observations
Observations that are detected with other senses such as hear and taste
Inferences
Something you assume to be true based on prior knowledge and observations
Variables
Conditions that can change during an experiment
Independent Variable
The variable that you have direct control of
Dependent Variable
The variable that changes as a result of the independent variable. The variable you don't control
Controlled Experiment
An experiment that tests the effects of one independent variable at a time
Control Group
The independent variable is not changed to provide a comparison
Experimental Group
The independent variable is changed and the results are compared
Metric System
A universal measurement system used by scientists that is based on the number ten
Meter
The base unit that is used to measure length
Liter
The base unit that is used to measure volume
Gram
The base unit that is used to measure mass
