Science
A process of asking questions about the natural world. Includes logic, prior knowledge to solve problems and doesn't need to involve a lab.
Scientific Method
A process of doing science (takes many steps)
Observations
Something you detect using your senses that you notice in your surroundings.
Purpose
Something you want to figure out based on your observation.
Hypothesis
A possible scientific answer to your question, but must be testable, logical, and based on your observations, prior knowledge, and evidence.
Experiment
Testing the hypothesis by collecting and recording data.
Analysis and Conclusion
Evaluating and interpreting your data to determine whether your hypothesis is correct.
Repeat
If your data does not support your hypothesis then make a new one and repeat the process if it does then repeat again to make sure you get the same results.
Theory
Used to explain a wide set of observations and facts, that are backed up by a lot of evidence and has been tested by numerous people and times.
Quantitative Observations
observations using numbers.
Qualitative Observations
Observations based on your senses.
Direct Observations
Observations you can see.
Indirect Observations
Observations based on your other senses.
Inferences
An educated guess.
Variables
The conditions that can change during an experiment.
Independent Variable
The variable that you can change. The variable that you have direct control over.
Dependent Variable
The variable that changes as a result of the independent variable. The variable that you have no control over.
Control Group
Independent variable is not changed to provide a comparison to the control group.
Metric System
Universal system of measurement by scientists.
Meter
type of measurement for length.
Liter
Type of measurement for volume.
Gram
Type of measurement for mass.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment that tests the effects of one independent variable at a time.
Experimental Group
Independent variable is changed and the results are compared to the control group.
