Science
A process that uses logic, critical thinking, and observations to solve problems. (Does not have to be lab experiment.)
Scientific Method
A process of doing Science.
Observation
Something you notice about you surroundings using any of your senses.
Purpose
A question you ask about the observations you made.
Hypothesis
A possible answer to a scientific question based on logic, observation, prior knowledge, and evidence that is testable.
Experiment
The testing of a hypothesis by collecting and researching data. A data table is often used.
Analysis & Conclusion
Evaluating and interpreting your data to determine whether or not your hypothesis is correct. A graph is often used in order to analyze the data.
Repeat
If your data does not support you data to hypothesis, create a new one and try again. Even if the data supports you hypothesis, do everything again in order to be sure you get the same results each time.
Theory
Something used to explain a wide set of observations and facts that is supported by a lot of evidence and has been tested multiple times by multiple people.
Quantitative Observations
Observations that are made using measurements and a numerical opint of view.
Qualitative Observations
Process in which your senses are used to make observations.
Direct Observations
When you use only your sight to make observations about something.
Indirect Observations
Observations made using senses other than you sight.
Inferences
Something you believe to be true based only upon observation and prior knowledge.
Variables
Things that could change during an experiment. There is always at least two variables in an experiment.
Independent Variable
The variable that you control and change in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
This is the variable that you have no control and changes as a result of the independent variable(s).
Controlled Experiment
An experiment done to test the effects of one single independent variable at a time while the researcher tries to keep all the other independent variables constant.
Control Group
When the independent variable is not changed in order to provide a comparison and conditions are set to normal.
Experimental Group
When the independent variable is changed. It is ten compared to the control group.
The Metric System
The universal system of measurements used by scientists all over the world. It is based on the number ten.
Meter
A basic unit of length.
Liter
A basic unit of volume.
Gram
A basic unit of mass.
