The Prince
Most famous book by Machiavelli that shocked everyone.
Machiavelli - Government
1. Before Machiavelli the government provided prosperity, administered justice, and strengthened faith. 2. Machiavelli said the government existed to only strengthen and expand. 3. "The end justifies the means." - The leader is allowed to do absolutely anything as long as it maintains the power of the state.
Machiavelli
1.Machiavelli had an amoral view stating that the value of the state comes first and then morality. 2. He said good and evil are relative or not absolute. Believed the best government is one that gets things done and is efficient. 3. Ruler should have VIRTUE (manly), PRUDENT (sensible), should NOT COMMIT EVIL unless it serves the state, ADAPTABLE, UTILITARIAN, and PRAGMATIC. 4. Religion could be any faith and it was used when possible to unify the people. Not a fan of Christianity. 5. Pessimisic view of life. Human nature is fixed and not changeable. "How we live is nothing like how we ought to live".
Hobbes
State of Nature - "Life is poor, nasty, solitary, brutish, and short."
Machiavelli
Study of man unto himself
Hobbes beliefs
1. State of Nature (without organized government) 2. Fear of Death 3. Need a contract between the people 4. Need a strong govenment or state that is ruled by a monarch. The monarch is above the contract. 5. Central purpose of the government is to keep the peace and security. 6. Civil Society is any activity, group, organization between you and the government should be limited. 7. Religion should never interfere with any activity with government. Very superstitions. 8. No universally values. No behavior that are always good or evil. Always relative. 9. Wanted people to have a good life. 10. Ruler should be pragmatic/utilitarian.
7 Ways in which Hobbes is NOT Totalitarian
1. Leader: put into power with contracts. 2. State keeps the peace for the benefit of the citizens. 3. Authoritarian: Limits on the government. Leader is very powerful but doesn't have absolute authority. 4. Leader is NOT a cult figure but just a man like the rest of us. 5. War is defensive. Not glorified and only to defend ourselves. 6. Outer Conformity only: had to obey the law. Believe what you want to but you have to obey the laws. 7. Individual life has meaning. Wanted people to have a good life.
