ABORTION
artificially induced or spontaneous expulsion of embryo or fetus before it is viable.
CESAREAN
delivery of a fetus through the abdominal wall.
FETUS
developing body in utero from beginning of the 9th week until birth.
TERM
time of expected delivery.
NURSE-MIDWIFE
qualified registered professional who has evidence of certification according to the requirements of ACNM.
PREPARED CHILDBIRTH
education for the patient and family for labor. Do this to reduce or eliminate the use of drugs.
AMNION
innnermost of the extraembryonic membranes enveloping the embryo in utero and conatining the amniotic fluid.

relating to birth.

state of a woman from conception to childbirth; syn; gestation.
OBSTETRIC FORCEPS
double-bladed forceps used to assist in delayed delivery.
IMPLANTATION
embedding of embryo into or on endometrium.
CHORION
the multi-layered outermost fetal membrane consisting of extraembryonic somatic mesoderm, trophoblast, and, on the maternal side, its villi are bathed by maternal blood.
E.D.C.
expected date of confinement; AKA: EDD(expected date of delivery).
OBSTETRIC
branch of medicine that pertains to care for women during pregnancy, L&D, and postpartum period(puerpurium).
PUERPERIUM
state of woman inlabor or one who has just delivered.(6 weeks)
PERMATURE DELIVERY
expulsion of fetus after 28 weeks and before term.
CERVIX
lower part of uterus.
EMBRYO
product of conception from moment of fertilization until the end of the 8th week.
PARTURITION
process of giving birth; syn: childbirth.
PRENATAL
before birth.
ADCANCED PRACTICE NURSE
RN with specialized knowledge and skills acquired through graduate study in nursing; ex: nurse practitioner.
ADVOCATE
a person who speaks on behalf of another.
BIRTHING CENTERS
provides L&D services in a comfortable, home-like setting.
CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
a nurse specialized in a certain area(has to have at least a master's degree).
