What is the job of the state?
provides people with things they can't provide, defends itself against other states, owns the army, police, and jails, and is the basis of our current system
What are the characteristics of a state?
-habitable territory
-permanent population
-governance of all throughout land
-ability to deal with other states
What are the characteristics of a nation?
one or all of the following:
-common ethnicity
-common language/culture
-shared religion

*usually self defined
-shared experience of becoming a people
What are the 2 types of cooperation?
1) marriage: accidental/natural agreement. ex: scandinavia. ex: Icelands banks fail, Nordic countries give loans

2)bargains: cooperation through treaties and other negotiations
