Sketch drawings
Sketches are typically freehand drawings that are created during the preliminary phase of a design.Sketches are used while brainstorming ideas, inventing, exploring alternatives, etc. quick, effiecent.
Techinical Drawings
Technical drawings are more formal than sketches.
Scale
The scale is the ratio of the drawing size to the actual size.
Porportional
Since freehand sketches are intended to be performed relatively quickly, it is not necessary to ensure that a sketch is scaled, but it must at least be proportionally correct. In other words, the sketch should not be grossly distorted.

3rd Angle Projection
The front view is the main view, the top view is on top, and the right-side view is on the right.
2 View Drawing
Front and right-side views
Top and Front (perferred) |

What surface in the top view is represented by line C in the right side view?
H
Name the three views that are used to describe the shape and size of the part.
Top, Front, and Right Side

Q
What encircled letter in the front view denotes an object line?
E
1st Angle projection
the top view is located below the front view, and the left-side view is located to the right.
Which Angle Projection is used in the U.S. and Canada?
3rd Angle Projection
baseline dimensioning
The practice of referencing all locations from an established point or edge helps to overcome inaccuracies due to surface irregularities
placing dimensions by drawing extension lines which originate approximately ________ from the object and extend _________ beyond the arrowhead.
1/16th inch (1.5 mm)
1/8th inch (3 mm) |
__________ dimensioning is preferred over _________ dimensions.
Continuous
staggering |
counterbored hole
one that has been machined to a larger diameter for a specified depth so that a bolt or pin will fit into this recessed hole.
countersunk hole
a cone-shaped recess that is machined in a part to receive a flat-head screw or bolt
12o15’45”
12 + 15/60 + 45/3600 = 12.26o
Unilateral tolerances
allows deviation from the nominal (or basic) dimension in one direction
Bilateral tolerances
allow for deviation in both directions
True or False? Bilateral tolerances do not always have to be the same in both directions
True
Screw threads can be drawn using one of three methods
Pictorial – shows threads exactly as they appear.
Schematic – not as detailed as the pictorial representation Simplified – typically what is used |
External threads
threads that are visible on the outside of the object, like the threads on a bolt.
Internal threads
threads that are formed inside an object, like the threads on a nut.
