Forces
-a push or pull
-a vector quantity
-unit of force is a Newton (N)
-1N =1kg(m/s^2)
-net force is the sum of all forces acting on the object
Force of Gravity
-always points towards the center of the Earth
-To calculate the magnitude of the force of gravity on an object you multiply the mass of the object (m) by the acceleration due to gravity F=mg
Normal Force
Force that is perpendicular to the surfaces of the objects in contact
Force of Friction
-Force between objects in contact and parallel to the contact surfaces
-acts in the opposite direction to the direction of the object's motion or attempted motion
Applied Force
A force that results when one object makes contact with another and pull or pushes on it
Tension Force
Pulling force from a rope or string on an object that always points toward the rope of a string
Gravitational Force
Force of attraction between all things in the universe
-acts on objects even if they are not in contact with one another
-Force of gravity is noticeable if at least one of the objects has a large mass
Electromagnetic Force
-Force caused by electric charges
-Includes both electric forces and magnetic forces
