Types of computers

- desktop pc- not designed for portability but for general use for single person


- laptop- portable, integrate display, keyboard, mouse, processor, memory and hard drive in a compact package


- server- provide services to other computers over a network


Workstation- desktop computer with more powerful processor, more memory and enhanced capabilities

Terminology

Motherboard- main circuit board of microcomputer


Central processor unit- brains of the computer


Basic input/output system- built in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disc


ROM- non-volatile form of memory which has been prerecorded onto a chip and can’t be altered, only read


RAM- volatile form of memory used to load and run programs


Binary term or byte- unit of storage capable of containing a single character


Input device- any machine that feeds data into computer e.g USB stick, keyboard


Output device- device capable of representing info from the computer e.g plotter, display screen


Hardware- refers to object you can touch e.g printer, USB stick


Network- group of 2 or more computers linked together

Define Local Area Network

HS ships will use LAN which connects workstations and personal computers. Each computer in the LAN will have its own CPU but can also access data and devices anywhere on the LAN
