What is chemistry?
The study of the composition, properties and changes that matter undergoes,
What is matter?
anything that has mass and occupies space.
Example: book, air, water etc |
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid,liqud and gas
What is a property?
a characteristic that is used to distinguish between different forms of matter
Descripe the characteristics of a liquid
No definite shape, takes the shape of the container. It has a definite volume
Descripe the characteristics of a solid
has a definite shape and feinite volume.
Descripe the characteristics of a gas
no definite shape or voume
what is a chemical property?
a characteristic that is observed when matter undergoes change or resists changes. Ex: rusting of a nail, gold resisting rust.
what is a physical property?
a characteristic that is used to observed without matter undergoing changes.Example: color, smell, taste, temp, density etc
What kind of changes does matter undergo?
Physical change and chemical change
what is a chemical change?
a change in which new substances are formed and the basic composition is changed. ex: burning of paper (paper to ashes)
what is a physical change?
a change in which no new substances are formed. Basic composition is the same. Changes the physical apperance. ex: liquid to solid (freezing of water) (stretching a rubber band)
What is a substance?
Single form of matter with unique properties and uniform throughout
what is a mixture?
a combination of 2 or more substances. Each substance retains its own property and composition may vary.
What is an element?
Its a single substance that cannot be simplified by any means. Cant break it down. Its natural occuring or man made. Solid, liquid or gas.
what is a compound?
two or more elements combined with one another that can be seperated by chemical needs only. ex H2O (hydrogen and oxygen)
How are elements distinguished?
by their names and symbols. Symbols of element is 1 or 2 letters of the English or derived name of the element.
What are the first 20 elements on the Periodic table and there symbols?
Hydrogen-H
Helium-He Lithium-Li Berylium-be Boron-B Carbon-C Nitrogen-N Oxygen-O Flourine-F Neon- N Sodium-NA Potassium-K Iron- Fe Copper-Cu Gold-Au Silver-Ag Mercury-Hg |
what do you call two compounds put together?
a mixture
ex: salt water, sugar |
What are two different types of mixtures
Heterogeneous, homogeneous
what is a geterogeneous mixture?
a mixture with distinct phases (we can tell by looking) The differences between the substances. Ex: chicken noodle soup
what is a homogeneous mixture?
no distinct phases, looks the same, uniform throughout. ex: sugar dissolved in water. (cant see with your eyes)
