As a science it deals with the health, strength, and conquest of the body as a philosophy it equips one to attain poise and face all the vicissitudes of life's sorrow and joys with equanimity. It is a practical subject; a direct and experiential rather than discursive. It's practice brings a scattered and incoherent mind you coherent reflective state. There are three paths Jnana manga, karma manga and Bhakti which blend into one path. It has 8 limbs

Sadhana is commonly translated as penance or austere practice. It is an effortful and effectual endeavor to reach a goal no matter what the impediment or obstacles. It is a skillful process of ever increasing efficiency for accomplishing the chosen path. It is a 3-fold practice of tapas, svadyaya, and ishvarapranidhana kriya sadhana as explained in Patanjali's sadhana pada and the 8-limbs are practiced by the sadhaka in three levels bahiranganga, antaranga, antaratma sadhana outer inner and inner most quest
