What is the purpose of the cuticle?

The cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft.


It is formed from dead cells that strengthen and protect the hair shaft.

What is the function of the cortex?

The cortex is between the cuticle and the medulla.


This is the thickest layer which contains the hairs pigment, giving the hair colour.

What is the function of the Medulla?

The medulla is the innermost later of the hair shaft.


This is the most soft and fragile layer and serves as the marrow or the hair.

What causes a cluster of ingrown hairs?

When cells reproduce rapidly blocking the mouth of the follicle. This forces the hair to grow inwards.


Exfoliating the skin will help yo remove the dead skin cells to open the follicle.
