Why do you want this job?

Im in a system right now where its the same thing all the time, i grew up in the school system not just as a student but as a son to an administrator, i know that the job changes and its always something different, id like to expand myself and experience different things day in and day out.

Why do you want to work here?

Co-ops are unique. ive had a chance to talk to some colleagues that work in a co-op. a friend recently accepted a position out in the Lincoln Way Area and he and i have talked in lengths about what he is doing and it sounded like something I could see myself doing. Speaking with my father,an DuPage area superintendent, and he has talked highly of the co-op and has encouraged me to look at Co-Ops. He also put me in touch with Sam Canotta from Sased, and we spoke together about this position

Based on what you know, what are some of the biggest challenges

The funding model, but that is tied to enrollment. Grant work (quite a bit to learn in the grant world), i spent time with these resources on the grant work and i feel i have some connections that are willing to help) From what I’ve learned is that Co-op is different and we will need to learn individual funding source that is available.

What is your experience with Negotiations

The only experience i have with negotiations is classwork, however, I have resources I can go to who have extensive experience in negotiations should I have any questions. I’d also lean on the new executive director.

What do you see your role to be in bargaining

As the business manager, I’d see my role as a support person supporting the executive director and the attorney and I’d be the support person there to provide financial data and projections to the attorney and executive director.

Financial Projections

I would solicit other co-ops and at the same time I would solicit other bargaining contracts from our member districts OR PMA Model that has everyone collective bargained information available (forecast 5)

Revenue/Expenditure Sources

Tuition coming in, grants and enrollment trends (it can change due to high maintenance student and a lot of money is being sent/ graduates or ages out and is removed from the co-op and was expensive, now we are saving some money)

What are your Goals

I want to do a great job and help the co-op foster and grow. 5 years from now i want to look back and be able to say I'm doing a better job than i can do right now.

How would I use an assistant?

Clerical tasks associated with the job and have help digging for data and how the co-op is operating and provide background and assistance in my role

How do I stay current (on your job)

At this point in my career I just finished my CSBO program and I feel like i’m pretty up on things but I think getting involved in the business manager association and maintaining a relationship with other business managers not only in co-ops but districts as well.

What is your Leadership/Management Style

It's an eclectic leadership style. When the time comes when i need to take an aggressive approach i can do that. If I need to be a facilitator and work through a question or situation I can do that.

Budget Development

Facilitative experience working with others to determine what people need/don’t need. Aware of the fact that most of the budget is accounted for with fixed items (salaries and fixed cost) that there is not too much flexibility.

Management Style

Fair, open and accessible. very commutative.

What are your biggest weaknesses

I have the degree and the supports i just have not done this job before, and speaking what Sam, there is going to be a learning curve.

What are your strongest strengths

I’m thorough but timely. I learn what I need to learn and take the time necessary to access my support network and make sure that I’m doing everything that needs to be done to bring forward honestly good results.

Any last comments/statements/tell me about yourself

I know I have a lot of growing and learning to do about the system and look forward to doing that.

What is a Co-Op to you

It’s all about meeting the needs of what the schools/districts have. The issues with Co-Ops is that a lot of districts are taking back services into their districts (either cheaper to run the services or they can’t afford the services) so we have to find ways to provide those services to districts (sell our services)the way i see my role is working with the executive director to identify what the services are that we need to provide and create as many efficiencies as possible (and try to pass along savings to make it as attractive to the schools possible) enrollment is low we need to be efficient as possible to continue to provide servicesworking with grants to create efficiency
