PROTOCOL
Is a set of rules.
POP
(point of presence) a gateway or access way to the internet.
NAP
(network access point) decides how traffic is routed and decides which way you are going.
IP
(internet protocol) allows you to send data over the internet.
TCP
(transmission control protocol) breaks down data into small packets which makes it faster to go through all the protocols.
NETWORK
a group of computers that are connected together by communication channels, which send information between them.
FTP
(file transfer protocol) allows files to be transferred between two computers which allow you to download and upload to trigger memory.
ISP
(internet service provider) a company/business which has a gateway which you have to pay to get into the internet. for example BT.
SERVER
a computer or program that serves the needs of other computers.
CLIENT
a computer that uses the services provided by the server.
ROUTER
a piece of hardware that connects two or more networks together.
CONNECTING BACKBONE
the main connecting data routes between large networks on the internet and smaller networks in local regions.
WIRELESS CONNECTION
used by wireless-enables devices (phones computers) to log on to the internet. no wires to connect.
BROADBAND CONNECTION
a wired connection to a broadband supplier. connects via network card in the computer.
DIAL-UP CONNECTION
a wired connection via a convectional telephone line, which needs a modem to convert signals to and form analogue for transmission.
BANDWIDTH
a way of measuring how much data can be carried over a network.
ETHERNET
is used to connect users to a network.

the amount of data transferred within a unit of time (bits pet second)
