What 3 things contribute to skin color?
Melanin, hemoglobin, carotene
How does hemoglobin (which is inside the red blood cells in dermal BV's) contribute to skin color?
Upon binding to oxygen, hg exhibits a bright red color giving bv's in the dermis a reddish tint that is seen most easily in the skin of lightly pigmented individuals.
What determines normal skin color?
Mostly melanin: gives skin various yellow, reddish, tan, brown, and black shades.
How is melanin transferred and in what layer does this occur?
In a membrane-bound vesicle from melanocytes to keratinocytes in the the STRATUM BASALE
What is the weakest of the skin pigments?
Carotene. Yellow0orange pigment that is acquired by eating various yellow-orange veggies.
Where does carotene accumulate?
Normally inside the keratinocytes of the stratum corneum and within the subcutaneous fat.
What is significant about carotene in the body?
It converts to vitamin A!!
Melanocytes don't work
Albinism
"michael jackson" disease loosing patches of melanocytes, it's an autoimmune disease
vitiligo
Blueness, lack of oxygen for your hemoglobin, takes on a maroon color, poor oxygenization, caused by malfunction or blockage
cyanosis and acrocyanosis
Lack of hemoglobin and red blood cells (anemia), hemoglobin),
Pallor/paleness
Yellow-something wrong with liver. Pigment called billyrubin (break-down product of hemoglobin) contributes to bruising
Jaundice
Reddish changes, bull's eye rash (lyme disease), skin turns red because vessels dialate which increases redness.
Erythema
What is a hematoma
A bruise (visible pool of clotted blood) is observable through the skin, due to trauma, may be indicative of of hemophilia or a nutritional or metabolic disorder
What sets in 1-2 hours after death and will initially blanch when squeezed?
Postmortem lividity (livor mortis)
What happens to the skin eight hours after death
Red Blood cells fragment and escape into the surrounding tissues and the area will not blanch when squeezed.
