What is the phonological or sound system?
It is the sound system of Standard English with approximately 44 sounds and more than 500 ways to spell the 44 sounds.
What is the syntactic or structural system?
It is the structural system of English that governs how words are combined into sentences: syntax, grammar, prefixes, suffixes etc.
What is the semantic or meaning system?
It is the meaning system of English that focuses on vocabulary.
What is the pragmatic or social and cultural use system?
It is the cultural use system of English that varies language according to social and cultural uses.
Phonological Awareness:
The ability to identify and manipulate phonemes, onsets and rimes, and syllables; it includes phonemic awareness. Example: Having the students clap out the syllables to words.
Phonemic Awareness:
The ability to manipulate the sounds in words orally. Example: When having the children learn about different vowel sounds pick one word from each vowel group and when a new word is said aloud the children will act out the word that had the same vowel sound. For example, if the vowel sound of the new word matches the word apple, then the children will act like they are taking a bite of an apple.
Predictable Books:
The stories and other books that teachers use for shared reading with young children often have repeated words and sentences, rhyme, or patterns. Example: Reading Green Eggs and Ham and having the children say the repeated sentences or rhymes.
Predictable Charts:
A chart created by the teacher and students where the sentence begin the same. Example: The teacher starts the sentence with At recess I will… and the children finish it with their own ideas.
Print-Rich Environment:
A classroom that has print throughout the classroom through labeling, posters and learning materials. Example: Labels everywhere and a word wall.
Interactive Writing:
A writing activity in which students and the teacher write a text together, with the students taking turns to do most of the writing themselves. Example: The teacher starts the first sentence of a story and each child adds a sentence of their own to create the whole story.
Shared Reading:
The teacher reads a book aloud with a group of children as they follow along in the text, often using a big book. Example: Reading the Brown Bear book and the children having puppets to the different animals throughout the book. When the animal the child has as a puppet is said aloud then the child raises their puppet in the air.
Shared Writing:
The teacher and students create the text together; then the teacher does the actual writing. Students may assist by spelling familiar or high-frequency words. Example: The teacher and the children work together to write a poem on a big piece of paper. The teacher does the writing but the students come up with the lines and help spell the words.
