What is the Minimum Enroute Altitude (MEA)?
The lowest published altitude between radio fixes that ensures acceptable navigational signal coverage and meets obstacle clearance requirements between those fixes. Typically 1,000 ft in non-mountainous terrain and 2,000 ft in mountainous terrain.
What is the Minimum Obstruction Clearance Altitude (MOCA)?
The lowest published altitude in effect between radio fixes on VOR airways, off-airways routes, or route segments that meet obstacle clearance requirements for the entire route segment and ensures acceptable navigational signal coverage only within 22 NM of a VOR.
What are the 5 sections of an Instrument Approach Chart?
1. Margin Identification
2. Pilot Briefing Information 3. Plan View 4. Profile View 5. Airport Diagram |
6. Landing Minimums/Notes
What is the Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA)?
For emergency purposes only, guarantees 1,000 ft obstruction clearance in the sector indicated with reference to the bearing in the circle.
Precision Approaches use a ____?
DA/DH
Non-Precision Approaches use a ____?
MDA
What may the required visibility minimum be reduced to for Cat A aircraft?
The required visibility minimum may be reduced to one-half of the published visibility min for Cat A aircraft, but in no case may the reduction be less than ¼ mile or 1,200 ft RVR.
What is the Touchdown Elevation Zone (TDZE)?
The highest elevation within the first 3,000 ft of the runway.
How do you determine a standard rate turn?
A turn made 45 degrees in 15 seconds. Take TAS divided by 10, then add ½ of what you get. Approximately 12 degrees at 80 kts.
What should your bank angle be while in holding?
Bank angle should be made at 25 degrees or a rate of 3 degrees per second.
What are the SVFR minimums in controlled airspace?
Helicopter SVFR minima is 1/2 SM visibility and clear of clouds unless a higher minimum is required by the airfield.
Describe Class A Airspace.
From 18,000 FT MSL up to and including FL 600. Includes airspace w/ in 12 NM of coast. IFR only.

Class C Airspace
SFC to 4,000 ft above airport elevation (charted in MSL)
Core from SFC to 4,000, with an outer area from 1,200 ft to 4,000 ft. Two Way Radio Contact 2 way radio Mode C transponder |

What are the different special use airspace?
1. Military Operations Area
2. Controlled Firing Area 3. Warning Area 4. Alert Area 5. Restricted Area 6. Prohibited Area |
What is a prohibited area?
Flight of aircraft is prohibited. Normally to do with national security.
What is a restricted area?
Areas where operations are hazardous to non-participating aircraft. Often denote the existence of unusual, often invisible hazards to aircraft (artillery, aerial gunnery, guided missiles)
What is a warning area?
Extends from 3 NM outward from the coast.
What is an MOA?
Supposed to separate military training from IFR traffic. Nonparticipating IFR traffic may be cleared through if IFR separation can be provided by ATC.
What is an alert area?
Area contains a high volume of pilot training or unusual type of aerial activity.
What is a TFR?
Temporary Flight Restriction. Put into place when traffic in an airspace could endanger or hamper air or ground activities (President traveling, baseball games, etc) in the designated area.
