Putting PPE on:










1) slip arm into gown sleeves and tie the back of thee neck and waste.


2) Mask with metal band on outside of nose, cover both mouth and nose.


3) Put on protective eye wear.


4) Shoe covers if needed.


5) Gloves, cuffs are pulled up over the gown cuffs.











Removing PPE:















1) remove gloves without contaminating your hands.


2) Remove protective eye wear, without touching face.


3) Remove the face mask, by untying lower string first, then upper.


4) Unfasten the waist tie on gown then neck ties. Place hands inside neck line and pull gown down off shoulders, pull out arms from gown , dispose.









Steps to washing hands:









1) Wet your hands with water pointing fingers downward.


2) Apply soap to hands.


3) Rub vigorously for 15 to 30 seconds.


4) Rinse the wrist,hands, finger tips, keeping fingers down.


5) Dry hands with paper towels.


6) use paper towel to shut off water be careful not to touch faucet with hands.










Inserting a NGT.









1) Explain procedure & have all materials on hand.


2) Put on gloves.


3) Measure the distance the tube is to be inserted from tip of nose to tip of ear, and then to xiphoid process, mark with a piece of tape.


4) Lubricate tip of tube,& insert it through nostral, patients head hyperextended, aim tube down toward the ear.


5) As the tube reaches back of the throat, have the patient take sips of water through a straw, drop the head forward, and begin to swallow.


6) Advance tube everytime patient swallows.


7) Check the placement of the tube, by aspirating stomach contents. If none is obtained put patient on left side and insert tube 1" to 2" test fluid PH with PH strips.


8) Secure with tape to bridge of nose and curl up tubing stomach area and secure with tape and safety pin to gown.









NGT Removal:









1) Check physicians order.


2) Assess amount, color, character of drainage.


3) Explain procedure.


4) Elevate the head 30 degrees.


5) Perform hand Hygiene & put on gloves.


6) Turn off suction machine< feeding pump. Place towel or basin under removal of tube. Flush tube with 20 ML of water, followed by 20 ML of air, pinch tube and pull out quickly.
