Advantage and disadvantage of a keyboard?
Enable fast entry of new text into a document.
Fairly large, take up valuable desk space.
What is a concept keyboard?
Uses icons or phrases instead of standard letters.Used in fast food restaurants.
Advantage and disadvantage of a concept keyboard?
Enable fast data entry. Limited with options shown on the keyboard.
What is a numeric keypad?
Used to enter number only.Used in ATMs where you type in your personal identification number(PIN).
Advantage and disadvantage of a numeric keypad?
Faster then standard keyboards. Can be difficult to use, very small keys.
What is a mouse?
It is a pointing device, you move the mouse around so you can control the pointer on the screen. Used for opening, closing and minimising software.
Advantage and disadvantage of a mouse?
Faster to select an option then using a keyboard. They are difficult to use if there is no flat surface available.
What is a touchpad?
Used in laptops as a pointing device. Controlled by the user moving their finger on the touchpad. Can be used for grouping, moving and deleting files.
Advantage and disadvantage of a touchpad?
Integrated into the laptop, so no need for a mouse-less to carry. Can be more difficult to control the pointer compared to a mouse.
What is a trackerball?
The ball is on top of the device and you control the pointer by rotating the ball. Used in applications where the user has a disability.
Advantage and disadvantage of a trackerball?
Don't need the same fine control as a mouse. User may need training, not standard equipment.
What is a remote control?
A device used to control the operation of devices by using infrared signals. Used for television.
Advantage and disadvantage of a remote control?
You can use it from any distance. The signal between the control and the device can be easily blocked.
What is a joystick?
By gripping the stick, a pointer on the screen can be controlled. Used in video games.
Advantage and disadvantage of a joystick?
Easier to navigate round a screen rather then a keyboard. More difficult to control the on-screen pointer then with a mouse.
What is a touch-screen?
You can choose an option by touching the icon on a screen. Used on interactive white boards used for education.
Advantage and disadvantage of a touch-screen?
Faster entry of options rather then using a keyboard. Limited number of options available.
What is a magnetic stripe reader?
They read information found on the stripe. Credit cards have them so they can be used at ATMs.
Advantage and disadvantage of a magnetic stripe reader?
Data entry is faster rather then keying in your details. If it gets damaged, the data is lost.
What is a smart card reader?
They contain chips with data stored on. Used on ID and public transport cards.
Advantage and disadvantage of a smart card reader?
Used instead of money, easier. If the card is lost, information stored on the chip could be used in identity theft.
What is a chip and PIN reader?
You slot your card into the device and the chip is read. The PIN is put in using a keypad. Used in shops.
Advantage and disadvantage of a chip and PIN reader?
Provide a more secure payment system then using a signature or magnetic stripe. Make sure no one reads your pin.
What is a scanner?
Used to enter information on hard copy into a computer.Scan in documents and convert them into a format for use in various software
Advantage and disadvantage of a scanner?
Faster and more accurate then typing. The quality can be limited, depends on how good the resolution is.
What is a barcode reader?
Used to read information in the form of a bar code. Usually in the form of a scanner. Used in supermarkets.
Advantage and disadvantage of a barcode reader?
Faster then keying in data and less mistakes are made. Not a foolproof system, codes can be swaped around on items.
What is optical mark recognition (OMR)?
A system which can read marks written in pen or pencil. Used to read multiple-choice examination papers.
Advantage and disadvantage of OMR devices?
More accurate than keying in data. The forms need to be carefully made to make sure that the marks are correctly positioned for good info.
What is a optical character recognition(OCR)?
Name given to software that takes scanned text and converts it into a computer readable form. Used in the processing of passports and identity cards.
Advantage and disadvantage of OCR readers?
Since no manual data entry, the number of errors is reduced. The system still has difficulty reading handwriting.
What is a magnetic ink character recognition(MICR)?
A system which can read characters printed in a special ink. Used to process cheques in banking operations. They can be read by using batch processing.
Advantage and disadvantage of MICR devices?
Greater security then OCR since the printed characters can't be altered. Only certain characters can be read and the number of different characters is very limited.
What is a digital cameras?
Produce photographs ofr transfer to a computer directly by a simple USB connection.
Advantage and disadvantage of digital cameras?
Easier to produce better quality photographs than with a traditional camera. Need to be know how to put it onto the computer.
What is a webcam?
They're connected directly to the computer through a USB port, they don't have a memory. Personal way of having a conversation whilst online.
Advantage and disadvantage of a webcam?
To keep in contact with each other without the need to travel, limited features, have a poor quality picture.
What is a microphone?
Directly connected to a computer, sounds can get inputted and manipulated.
What is an analogue to digital converted(ADC)?
Input sound is converted to an analogue signal and then converted into a digital signal. Used to input speech/sounds to be used in various applications.
Advantage and disadvantage of a microphone?
It's faster to read in text then to type it in using a keyboard.Sound files can take up a lot of memory.
What is a sensor?
Inputs data to a computer, where the data is a measurement of some physical quantity which is always changing like light, temperature.
Advantage and disadvantage of a sensor?
Readings taken are usually more accurate then those by human operators.Faulty ones can give bad results.
What is a graphics tablet?
Used with a stylus to produce freehand drawings. They are used in computer aided design (CAD) work.
Advantage and disadvantage of a graphics tablet?
Possible to modify drawings before they are input. More expensive then other pointing devices.
What is a light pen?
Have sensors that send signals to a computer when light changers are detected, they work with a cathode ray tube(CRT). Used for selecting objects on CRT screen.
Advantage and disadvantage of a light pen?
More accurate than touch screens.Only work with CRT monitors at the moment.
What is a CRT monitor?
Used as the primary output device for computers, they are becoming rare because of desktop computers.
Advantage and disadvantage of a CRT monitor?
Produce a higher quality image than TFT monitors. Heavy, take up a lot of desk space.
What is a TFT monitor?
Taking over CRT moniters, used as the primary output device.
Advantage and disadvantage of a TFT monitor?
Lightweight. The definition isn't sometimes good as CRT monitors.
What is a laser printer?
Produce very high quality hard copy output. Used where noise levels need to be kept low.
Advantage and disadvantage of a laser printer?
Good for printing high volumes fast.Very expensive to buy.
What is an inkjet printer?
Used to make good quality hard copies, not for as high volumes of paper, not very noisy.
Advantage and disadvantage of an inkjet printer?
Output is of a high quality.Very slow if several copies are needed.
What is a 3D inkjet printer?
Produces solid 3D modes using modified inkjet technology, used to make prototypes.
Advantage and disadvantage of a 3D inkjet printer?
Save a lot of money, creating prototypes are really expensive.Slow at producing their output.
What is a dot matrix printer?
The printhead is a matrix of pin, tend to be slo and bad quality.
Advantage and disadvantage of a dot matrix printer?
Used in environments where there would be a problem with other printers, like dust. They cost more than an inkjet printer to buy.
What is a plotter?
They can produce hard copies. they are capable of printing highly accurate, large drawings. Used for blueprints of buildings.
Advantage and disadvantageof a plotter?
Produce huge printouts. They are slow in operation.
What is a speaker?
Can be connected directly to a computer or are built into the monitor.
Advantage of a speaker?
Used to output sound from multimedia presentations.
What is a multimedia projector?
They recieve signals that are either analogue or digital. Used in presentations so the whole audience can see.
Advantage and disadvantage of a multimedia projector?
Avoid the need for several networked computers. Images can be fuzzy sometimes
