Intoropic Drugs
drugs that increase the contractions of heart and increases cardiac output. Are good for congestive heart failure
Congestive Heart Failure
when cardiac output goes down and a buildup of pressure occurs in the lungs. Vasoconstriction can also cause congestive heart failure
Digoxin and Digotoxin
two glycoside drugs that come from the digitalis plant and differ by a double bond. They increase heart contractions and cardiac output by blocking Na/K ATPase and blocking Na inside muscle fibers. Concentration of Ca increases which causes an increase in contractions. Endosystolic volume and HR rate goes down due to vagal nerve stimulation. Both are administrated PO/IV with digitoxin having a longer duration. (5 days over 36 hours) Adverse effects are ventricular arrhythmia, fibrillation, hypokalemia and headaches
Captopril
Is a short acting ACE inhibitor that causes vasodilation and increase in hyperkalemia. Adverse effects include coughing, metallic taste, fetal toxicity, decreases sympathetic tone
Nitroglycerin
causes vasodilation, has a fast onset with short duration
