What agents can be used to prevent the flu?
Amantadine, rimantadine
Use for 5-7 weeks or duration of epidemic of influenza A if cannot receive vaccine

Neuraminidase inhibitor
Oseltamivir - administered 75-150mg/day for 6 weeks

Zanamivir (Relenza)
10mg/ inhaled
When do you treat the flu?
Only treat if patient has severe symptoms or high risk for complications
What can you use to treat the flu?
1) Amantadine (Symmetrel), rimantadine (Flumadine)
- inhibitrs viral uncoating and release of viral nucleic acid
Effective only against influenza A
Causes GI sx's, peripheral edema, orthostatic hypotension
Usually treat for 3-7 days

Oseltamivir
inhibitrs neuraminidase
ADE: GI
decreas edose to daily if clcr <30

Zanamivir (relenza)
inhibits neuraminidase
two inhalations twice daily for 5 days
What are the chaarcateristics of the pneumococcal vaccine?
Pneumococcal vaccine contains 23 purified antigens from S. pneumoniae

Recommended for people >65, 2-64 year olds with chronic CV dx, DM, alcoholism, chronic liver dx, asplenia or living in special environments

Revaccinate if received vaccine >5 years ago and <65 years at the time

Asplenics should revaccinate after 5 years

Immunocompromised patients should receive single revaccination after 5 years
