What is IBD?

Chronic inflammation of the GI tract. Categorised into Chron’s disease of ulcerative colitis based on signs and symptoms

Outline the pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis

Multiple abscesses develop in the intestinal glands - abscesses break, leaving ulcerations. Ulceration destroy mucosal endothelium - causing bleeding and diarrhoea. Granulation tissue develops.

What are the major clinical manifestations of ulcerative colitis ?

Bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain

What is the age onset of ulcerative colitis and chrons disease ?

UC - 15/25 years


CD - 15/30 years

What are the clinical manifestations of UC and CD

UC - bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain


CD - onset is anytime. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss, fever and cramping

Where is the location of disease of UC and CD

UC - beginning at the rectum working up the colon


CD - layers of the bowel wall, commonly the ileum, jejunun and colon
