How is infertility defined?
Couple has had unprotected sex for a whole year, but has not become pregnant.
Also, woman who can conceive but not maintain pregnancy (>3 miscarriages).
Who is to blame for infertility?
35% female, 35% male, 20% both, 10% unknown
How is infertility assessed in the woman?
Follow the menstrual cycle and check for ovulation.
Laparoscopy done to check for blocks in the oviducts or uterus.
Endometrial biopsy to check for abnormal cells.
Blood test for hormone levels and antibodies against sperm.
Hughner test: check for cervical mucus within 2 hrs after intercourse and evaluate semen quality and survival in the FEMALE tract

How is infertility assessed in the man?
Semen analysis:
Morphology (<20% deformed)
Count (>20 million/mL)
If sperm count is low, blood test is performed to check hormonal levels.
Volume (1-6mL)
Fructose content (1200ug/mL)

Ovulatory disorders
Tubal obstruction
Endometriosis

Describe GIFT.
Gamete Intrafallopian transfer
Sperm and eggs in a petri dish are placed in the fallopian tube in the ampullar region in the hope that some eggs will be fertilized and implant. For women whose ovaries don't respond, and men whose sperm don't respond to hormonal treatment, an egg/sperm donor is used.
Describe ICSI.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
Delivers the sperm right into the egg.
