Usually caused by some predisposing factor that eliminates normal flora.
Helibacter pylori
Gram - rode with flagella
Resides in mucin layer of the stomach, potent urease creates ammonia that neutralizes stomach acid.

treatment - amoxycillin
Vibrio Cholerae
Infecting dose 10^8
Toxin mediated
causes watery diarrhea, no leukocytes.

Treatment - supportive, hydration
E. Coli
Endogenous organism with an Enteroadhesive allows attachment to entercyte.
Causes effacement and watery diarrhea.

treatment - Gentamicin, Ciproflaxacin, co-amoxiclav
Shigella
Gram - Rod that invades mucosa layer of colon causing effacement, death of cell, and invasion of neighboring cells.
Blooddy stool, neutrophils present.

treatment - supportive, sometimes ciprofloxacin
Salmonella Typhi
Gram - rod invades mucosal cell as well as submucosa and blood.

Regular stool w/ monocytes
Clostridium Difficile
-Gram Positive rod (anarobic) that is spore forming.
-Usually occurs when normal flora is killed by antibiotics such as clindamycin.
-releases A & B toxins casuing diarrhea.
-treatment metronidazole, voncomycin
Peritonitis
organisms - Enterococcus, Streptococcus, coliforms, and anarobes.
