Standard Precautions

1. Hand hygiene before and after patient contact.



2. Use of Personal Protective Equipment



3. The safe use and disposal of sharps



4. Routine environmental cleaning.



5. Reprocessing of reusable medical equipment and instruments.



6. Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette.



7. Aseptic non-touch technique.

Used in handling blood and all other body substances, secretions and excretions.

Transmission- based Precautions

Used when Standard prec alone does not fully prevent communicable disease transmission.


Three types of transmission:


1. Contact


2. Droplet


3. Airborne


The extra precautions made will depend on the mode of transmission of a specific disease.

Common Infections - precautions

Contact Precautions: MRSA, VRE


Airborne Precautions: TB, Varicella, Measles


Droplet Precautions: Mumps, Diptheria, Rubella


Bloodborne: Hep B, HIV

Aseptic Non Touch Technique Definition

A technique used to prevent contamination of key parts and key sites by microorganisms that could cause infection.
