What are some differences between CLDs and SFDs? |
CLDS: - holistic view of system - identify cause + effect + feedback loops - good for qualitative - behavior indication for simpler systems SFDs: - good for quantitative - can be used to create computer simulations |
What is a stock? |
Stock: element of a system that accumulates over time via inflows, and depletes over time via outflows (AKA level) - e.g. pop, money, patience |
What is a flow? |
Flow: amount of change a stock undergoes during particular unit of time (AKA rate) - e.g. birth rate, monthly interest rate |
What is a converter? |
Converter: part whose value is determined by behaviour of the system or is a part at the boundary of the system (anything that is not a stock or flow) - e.g. gap, desired level |
What is a source/sink? |
Source/sink: a stock that lies outside the system's boundary - e.g. source (water): a well - e.g. sink (money): shopping mall |
From the bathtub activity, what has been learned about stocks? |
- stock can be increased by increasing inflow AND by decreasing outflow - stocks have memory: much more difficult to change stock abruptly than change flow - stocks create delay: respond gradually to changes and act as buffers - stocks can decouple flows: flows can be independent and temporarily out of balance (e.g. outflow can occur without inflow) |
What are the steps for drawing BOT graphs? |
1. formulate problem 2. identify key variables 3. graph behaviour of variables over time - select time horizon - sketch graph - analyze |
What are reinforcing loops? |
compound change in on direction with even more change in that direction |
What are balancing loops? |
stabilizing; resist change in one direction with change in the opposite direction |
