1. Plaque Index (PLI) 2. Plaque Control Record 3. Plaque-Free Score 4.Patient Hygiene Performance 5. Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) |
1. Plaque Index (PLI): Purpose- Scoring/criteria- |
Purpose: asses the thickness of biofilm at the gingival area
Scoring: 0-3.0 (0 is best)
PL I Scoring: 5 types of scoring: |
1. PL I for Area 2. PL I for a tooth 3. PL I for Groups of teeth 4. PL I for the individual 5. PL I for a group |
PL I scoring for Area: |
Each area of a tooth is assigned a score from 0-3
PL I scoring for a Tooth: |
Scores for each area are totaled and dived by 4 |
PL I scoring for groups of teeth: |
scores for individual teeth may be grouped and totaled and divided by the number of teeth (used to compare right and left quads) |
PL I scoring for the individual: |
add the scores for each tooth and divide by the number of teeth examined |
PL I for a group: |
add the scores for each member of a group and divide by the number of individuals |
2. Plaque Control Record: -purpose -scoring |
-Purpose: record the presence of dental biofilm on individual tooth surfaces to visualize learning of biofilm control (what we use in clinic)
Total # of Tooth Parts with Biofilm ----------------------------------------------------- x 100= 6 x # of teeth present |
3. Plaque Free Score -purpose/scoring |
Purpose: determine location, number, and percentage of biofilm-free surfaces for motivation and instruction.
# of biofilm free surfaces x 100 ---------------------------------------------- # of available surfaces = percentage of biofilmfree surfaces
**100% is teh goal |
4. Patient hygiene performance
purpose and scoring |
Purpose: assess the extent of biofilm and debris over a tooth surface. soft foreign material, dental biofilm, materia alba, food debris that is loosely attached to tooth surface
scoring: 0-5 (0 is best)
Total debris score -------------------------- = 22/6 =3.66 # of teeth scored |
5. Simplified oral hygiene index ( OHI-S): Purpose/ scoring |
Purpose: asses oral cleanliness by estimated the tooth surfaces covered with debris and calculus
Scoring: total debres/calc score devided by # of teeth scored. individual scoring 0-3 (0 is best) combined scoring is 0-6 **score and add each individually, then add together. |

What are the 6 indices that measure for gingival and perio health: |
1. Perio screening and recording (PSR) 2. Community Perio index (CPI) (CPI-TN) 3. Sulcus bleeding index (SBI) 4. Gingival bleeding index (GBI) 5. Eastman interdental bleeding index (EIBI) 6. Gingival Index |
What is the purpose and what instrument is used for Periodontal screening and recording (psr)? |
Purpose; to assess the state of perio health of an individual pt. Instrument: Probe |
How is (PSR) scored? |
mouth is divided into sextants, record highest probe reading from each sextant in one of the six boxes provided.
What is the purpose of the Community Perio Index (CPI)?
What instrument is used? |
Purpose: to screen and monitor the perio status of populations.
Special probe with the black band to help record how deep the pockets are |
For (CPI) how many teeth are examined? What is recorded? |
in an adult 10 teeth are examined in a child 6 teeth are examined -bleeding, calculus, pocket depth |
In Sulcus Bleeding Index (SBI) what is the purpose and what instrument is used? |
Purpose: Locate areas of gingival sulcus bleeding and color changes. Using a probe |
what is the scoring for SBI? |
0-5 (0 is best, 5 is BOP, change in color, swelling, possible ulcerations) |
What is the purpose and instrument for Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) |
Record presence or absence of gingival inflammation as determined by bleeding from interproximal gingival sulci.
Instrument: Unwaxed Dental Floss |
Scoring for GBI: |
Number of bleeding areas and scorable units are recorded. Over a series of appointments, this can help motivate pt. and show progress. |
What is the purpose and instrument used for Eastman Interdental Bleeding Index (EIBI): |
Purpose: to assess the presence of inflammation in the interdental area as indicated by presence or absence of bleeding
Instrument: Triangular Wooden interdental cleaner |
What is the Scoring for EIBI? |
Number of bleeding areas/Total number of areas X 100 = % bleeding area
Ex: 13/30 X100 = 43% |
what is the purpose of Gingival Index? |
to assess the severity of gingivitis based on color, constency, and BOP |
What instrument is used and how is the GI scored? |
Probe is used, Scoring: 0-3 0=excellent .1-1 = good 1.1-2.0 = Fair 2.1-3.0 =Poor |
What are the 5 indices for dental caries:
1. DMFT or DMFS 2. def 3.dmft or dmfs 4. Early childhood caries (ECC and S-ECC) 5.Root Caries Index (RCI) |
What is the purpose of DMFT and DMFS |
to determine total dental caries experience, past and present, by recording either the # of affected teeth, or tooth surfaces.
based on 28 teeth, based on 128 Surfaces |
How to score DMFS and DMFT: |
total each componed separately, then add together. D+M+F |
What is the purpose of the def? |
determine dental carries experience for the primary teeth present in oral cavity by evaluating teeth or surfaces |
def for teeth = how many teeth? def for surfaces = how many surfaces? |
def for teeth = 20 teeth examined def for surfaces = 88 surfaces
(post teeth have 5 surfaces, and teeth have 4) |
How does the scoring for DMFS/DFMT and def and dmfs/dmft relate? |
they are all scored the same. add up each recording and then add them all together |
what is the purpose for the Early Childhood Caries index? |
to provide case definitions that determine caries status of children 5 years and younger. |
How is ECC scored? |
refer to table 22-1 in Indices notes |
What is the purpose of Root Caries Index? |
Purpose: to determine root caries experience for individual and groups and provide a direct, simple method for recording and making comparisons |
T/F: Only surfaces with visible gingival recession are counted for the RCI? |
True |
How is RCI scored? |
R-D + R-F ------------------------ X 100 = RCI R-D + R-F + R-N
R=recession D=decay F=filled N=no caries or restoration M=missing |
Name the 2 indices that measure fluorosis: |
Dean's fluorosis index Tooth surface index of fluorosis (TSIF)
What is the purpose and method of Dean's fluorosis index? |

0=normal 1=questionable 2=very mild 3=mild 4=moderate 5=severe |
What is the purpose and method of Tooth surface index of Fluorosis (TSIF) |
Purpose: measure the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis
