What are the funtions of the incisors?
Cutting and incising food.
Articulation and speech
Esthetics and appearance
Naturally occuring open contact between the teeth.

Common between the maxillary incisors.
Diastema
May be a hereditary trait or may be cause by thick labeial frenum extending between centrals.

Can be corrected by surgery or orthodontics
Diastema
Grooves present on incisal edge at eruption.

Usually worn away with chewing (attrition)

If still present on teeth it is because teeth are not in contact.
Mamelons
How many developmental depressions are created on the incisal edge.
2
What causes developemental depression.
3 lobes
Distal labial lobe
Mesial labial lobe
Mesial labial lobe
(If viewing the labial view)
The 4th developemental lobe of the tooth.

Present on lingual surface of all incisors.
Cingulum
These central or laterals may have a lingual pit.

Usually more common on lateral incisors.
Maxillary incisors
Runs in a mesial --> distal direction.

More prominent on the maxillary central incisors.

Appear on crown surface and appear closer together at cervical area of crown.
Imbrication Lines
What is the groove inbetween ridges on the imbrication line?
Perikymata
When is evidence of calcification appear on the permanent maxillary central?
3 months
At what age does the permanent maxillary central erupt
7-8 years
When is the root complete on the maxillary central
10 years
When does evidence of calcification appear on the permanent mandibular central
3 months
When does the permanent mandibular central erupt?
6-7 years
When is the root complete on the permanent mandibular central?
9 years
When does evidence of calcification appear on the permanent maxillary lateral?
1 year
When does the permanent maxillary lateral erupt?
8-9 years
When is the root complete on the permanent maxillary lateral?
11 years
At what age is there evidence of calcification of the permanent mandibular lateral?
4 months
At what age does the permanent mandibular later erupt?
7-8 years
When is the root complete on the permanent mandibular lateral?
10 years
Larger and wider incisor
Pronounced lingual anatomy
Crown is wider M->D than F->L
Central is larger than lateral
Rounded facial outline from the incisal aspect
Incisal edge is labial to root axis from the proximal view.
Maxially Incisors
Smaller and narrower
Lingual anatomy not pronounced
Crown wider F->L than M->D
Lateral larger than central
Flatter facial outline from incisal aspect
Roots broad (F-L) and flat
Incisal edge is lingual to root axis from proximal views.
Mandibular Incisors
Widest crown M-D of any permanent anterior teeth.
Sharp MI angle, rounded DI angle
Pronounced lingual anatomy with broad cingulum
Conical shaped root
Root 1 1/2 times longer than crown
HOC more incisally located on the mesial
Greatest depth of curvature of cervical line of any permanent tooth.
Maxillary Cenral
What ridges border the lingual fossa?
Marginal ridge and Incisal ridge
Are the angles more or less rounded than other anterior teeth on maxillary central incisors?
Less Rounded
Which cervial line has a more pronounced curvature?
On the mesial rather than the distal
Where is the incisal ridge centerd over on the maxillary central?
Over the root
Appears narrower M-D than central incisor.
More rounded incisal angles.
Very pronounced lingual anatomy but cingulum not as broad.
All curvatures and convexities more distinct.
Most common congenitally missing tooth.
Smaller in most dimensions than central except root is almost same length as central.
Maxillary Lateral
Which tooth is the CEJ curvature deep but not as great as the central?
Maxillary lateral
What lingual anatomy is more pronounced on the maxillary lateral vs. the central?
Fossa, ridges, grooves, or pits
Which labial surface is more complex?
The maxillary lateral or the maxillary central
Maxillary lateral
Which tooth closely resembles a canine from an incisal view.
Maxillary lateral
How many teeth exhibit straight cylindrical roots.

Name the tooth/teeth
Maxillary cenral and Maxillary lateral.
Lateral root is thinner and often curves distally near apex
Maxillary lateral
Which maxillary incisor has a blunt root?
Maxillary central
Vary in form more than any tooth in the mouth (exept third molars)
Maxillary laterals
Which teeth can be classified as "peg shaped"?
Maxillary laterals
What is the smallest tooth in the mouth?
Mandibular central
From facial view - bilaterally symmetrical in appearance.
Difficult to differentiate right and left due to symmetry: look for rounded DI angle or cervial line.
Incisal view - straight edge.
Depression on root surface is deeper on distal.
Smallest tooth in the mouth.
Occludes with only one tooth.
Mandibular Central
Smooth facial surface
Mandibular Central
Straight outline mesially and distally
Mandibular Central
HOC in incisal third
Mandibular Central
Small cingulum and shallow fossa lingually, very smooth anatomy
Mandibular Central
Contains no pits
Mandibular Central
HOC in cervial third labially and lingually
Mandibular Central
On an incisal view, it has a straight edge
Mandibular central
Shows more wear on the incisal edge on labial aspect
Mandibular Central
Incisal edge tips lingually
Mandibular Central
Less symmetrical and larger
From incisal view - incisal edge and crown appears twisted toward the distal.
Depression on root surface is deeper on the distal side of root.
Overall bigger, wider, and longer.
More concave and convex
Mandibular laterals
More rounded appearance than central
Mandibular lateral
Deeper developmental grooves
Mandibular lateral
HOC in incisal third, slightly gingival on distal.
Mandibular lateral
Lingual features (ridges, cingulum, tubercles) more prominent than centrals
Mandibular lateral
HOC in gingival third
Mandibular lateral
More pronounced cervical line curvature on mesial
Mandibular lateral
Slope of incisal edge helps differentiate this tooth from the tooth next to it.
Mandibular lateral
Linguoincisal ridge thicker.
Mandibular lateral
Crown appears twisted on root
Mandibular lateral
