W.C. Handy

A Creole pianist who was very popular during the early jazz era. He is self entitled as the "found of jazz", and is quite the ladies man. Wrote standards such as "King Porter Stomp".

A New Orleans cornet/trumpet play who was a mentor to Louis Armstrong. He was also the leader of a New Orleans all-star group called the Creole Jazz Band.

Joe 'King' Oliver

A Washington born arranger, composer, and pianist who was also a famous international band leader. He collaborated on a number of songs with Billy Strayhorn and was one of the firsts to appear in the media and create the image of an intellectual black.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington

Was the first important tenor saxophonist, and is often referred to as , "The father of tenor saxophone," who completely changed the image of this instrument from a novelty to a serious instrument symbolizing jazz.

Chicago born clarinet player who had successful careers in three discreet fields of music (jazz, pop, and classical), and he was very popular during the Big-Band Jazz Era.

Fats Waller

Pivotal musician in modern jazz who created an original and substantial trumpet style. Productive over a 50 year period, he is a key innovator and band organizer. He is also responsible for finding modern names such as Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams, while influencing Wynton Marsalis.

Miles Davis

One of the most competitive drummers and bandleaders of the big band Era. Became the legal gaurdian of Ella Fitzgerald, who also rose to fame in his band.
