What is immunology?
Study of the host defense system.
-Eliminate the pathogen, but do not harm the host.
What two immune functions are required?
Recognition and Response
What is recognition?
Two types: the detection of a:
foreign substance (bacteria, virus)
or the detection of altered self (cancer, virus)
What is a response?
Effector Response: elimination of the foreign substance
Memory Response: Subsequent exposures elicit a stronger and faster effector response
What is a gammaglobulin?
It is an immunoglobulin = antibody
What are phagocytes?
Cells that undergo phagocytosis to engulf foreign substances.
What is innate immunity?
The first line of defense against a microbial challenge and functional against any form of pathogen/foreign substance.
What is adaptive immunity?
It is a tailored attack against a specific pathogen that takes time to mount. It involves highly specific T and B lymphocytes.
It requires the selection and proliferation of specialized cells.
How are the two immune systems interdependent of each other?
If the pathogen averts the innate immune system, and enough time has mounted for the adaptive immune system to take effect than the pathogen must deal with both the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.
Name 5 components of the innate immune system?
Anatomic (physical) barriers
Physiological barriers
Phagocytic/Endocytic barriers
Inflammatory barriers
Antimicrobial substances
