Allelic Exclusion
In reference to antibody production, the case that in a heterozygous individual, only one of the 2 c-region alleles at the Ig - heavy chain or light chain loci is expressed in each B cell.
In the B cell population for each locus roughly half of the cells express one allele and the remaining cells express the other.
Isotype Switch
The process by which a B cell changes the class of Ig it makes while preserving the antigenic specificity.
Isotype switching involves a somatic recombination process that attaches a different heavy chain constant region gene to the existing variable region exon.
Somatic Hypermutation
Mutation that occurs at High frequency in the rearranged variable region DNA of Ig genes in activated B cells, resulting in the production of variant antibodies.
Some of which have a higher affinity for the antigen.
Surrogate Light Chain
Protein that mimics the light chain.
Forms a complex with the m (mu) chain to form pre-BCR
Antigenic Determinant
A part of the antigen that is bound by the BCR or Ab or gives rise to MHC binding peptide recognised by TCR
Co-Stimulatory molecule
A molecule on an APC that delivers activation signals to the interacting T-Cell.
e.g. CD80 = B7-1; CD86=B7-2
